Gifts for Cricketers
Buying for a cricketer is harder than it looks. Bats are personal - weight, size, pickup and shape all matter, and a bat that is wrong in any of them will sit in the shed. So this list starts with the gifts that cannot miss, and works down to the gear.
Everything here is made or done by hand at our workshop in Rydalmere, Sydney.
The gift they will not forget: make their own bat
Make Your Own Cricket Bat ($300) puts them in the workshop with us for the day. They pick the cleft, they shape the blade, they press it, and they walk out with a bat they made themselves. It is not a kit and it is not a demo. It is the real thing.
If a full day is too much, The JPGavan Cricket Bat Making Experience ($50) lets them watch their bat being made in front of them. For anyone who has spent thirty years playing without ever seeing how a bat is built, it lands harder than any piece of gear.
This is the one gift on the list nobody else in Australia can give them.
Giving an actual cricket bat
If you know their size and weight, a handmade bat is the gift of a lifetime.
- Pre-made bats are finished, photographed individually, and ready to go. What you see is the exact bat that arrives.
- Custom bats start at $499 and are built to their specification: willow grade, weight, shape, sweet spot, handle, stickers and finish.
- Junior bats for the kid who has outgrown last season's.
Do not know their size or weight? Do not guess. Get a gift card and let them choose, or bring them in and we will size them properly.

Common questions
What is a good gift for a cricketer?
If you know their bat size and weight, a handmade bat. If you do not, a bat-making experience or a gift card. Cricketers are fussy about bats for good reason, and a bat that does not suit them will not get used.
How much should I spend on a cricket gift?
Accessories and consumables sit under $50. A quality experience gift is $50 to $300. A senior English willow bat starts around $499. There is no wrong answer, but a well chosen $50 gift beats a badly chosen $500 one.
What size cricket bat should I buy as a gift?
Bat size depends on the player's height, and the weight depends on how they play. This is exactly why gift cards exist. If you want to get it right, bring them into the Sydney workshop and we will size them in person.
Can a cricket bat be engraved as a gift?
Yes. Laser engraving is available on custom bats and is popular for presentation bats, milestones and retirement gifts.
Do JPGavan gift cards expire?
No. They never expire, there are no processing fees, and they can be redeemed online or in person at the workshop.
