Need help choosing?

Choosing the right bat size is the first step to finding a bat you'll enjoy using.

As a general guide:

Under 145cm — Size 4 — 745mm
145–150cm — Size 5 — 770mm
150–165cm — Size 6 — 790mm
165–173cm — Harrow — 805mm
170–180cm — Small Mens (SM) — 835mm
175–183cm — Short Blade (SB) — 840mm
173–188cm — Short Handle (SH) — 850mm
Over 188cm — Long Blade (LB) — 865mm
Over 195cm — Long Blade+ / Long Handle (LB+ / LH) — 880mm

Most adult players use a Short Handle (SH). Short Blade (SB) is a great option for players who want a slightly shorter bat without moving to a Small Mens. Taller players often prefer a Long Blade (LB), while shorter adults, teenagers and many female players may find a Small Mens (SM) more comfortable.

Height is a great starting point, but your batting style and personal preference also matter.

Bat weights usually sit within a band rather than a single exact figure, and a spread of around 2–3oz within a size is normal. Choose the lighter end if bat speed, control and easy pickup matter most, or if the player is still building strength; move toward the heavier end if they prefer more mass through the ball and a fuller feel. Batting style matters too — players who rely on timing and fast hands often prefer a lighter pickup, while stronger hitters may like a little more weight through the ball. These ranges are typical, not prescriptive, and exact stock weights vary by profile, balance and handle/blade shape.

The sweet spot is the area of the blade that produces the cleanest contact with the ball. While every bat has a sweet spot, its position changes depending on the shape of the profile, which influences how the bat feels and performs.

A low sweet spot places more of the blade's mass towards the toe, making it well suited to players who spend plenty of time on the front foot or regularly play on lower-bouncing pitches. A mid-low sweet spot offers many of the same characteristics while providing a little more versatility across different lengths. Mid sweet spots spread the performance more evenly through the blade, making them a popular choice for players who face a variety of conditions. High sweet spots shift the hitting zone further up the blade and are often preferred by players who enjoy playing off the back foot or regularly bat on quicker, bouncier wickets.

We offer bats across all sweet spot positions because there isn't a single profile that's right for everyone. That said, many of our customers around Sydney and across Australia naturally gravitate towards mid and mid-low sweet spots. They tend to complement the turf pitches and playing conditions encountered by many club cricketers, while still offering plenty of versatility across different grounds and formats.

The best sweet spot is the one that suits your game. Consider where you score your runs, the wickets you play on most often and what feels comfortable in your hands. Every JPGavan bat lists its sweet spot position, making it easy to compare your options and choose the profile that matches your style of play. If you're unsure, we're always happy to help.

Every piece of English willow is unique. While appearance plays a part in grading, it's important to remember that performance isn't determined by grain count alone. All of our bats are individually selected and handcrafted to deliver outstanding performance.

Players / Featherblade

Our Players and Featherblade models are made from low-density English willow. This is the type of willow professional players look for, as it allows a bat to be made lighter without sacrificing size or power. The lower density means more wood can be left in the blade while maintaining a comfortable pickup, creating excellent balance and impressive hitting power.

Grade 1+ / Professional Plus

Our finest willow. Features 10+ straight, clean grains with minimal blemishes, offering the premium appearance expected from our highest grade.

Grade 1 / Limited Edition

Selected from high-quality English willow with 6–9 straight, clean grains and an excellent overall appearance. A superb choice for players wanting premium performance and looks.

Grade 2 / Test

May display minor cosmetic imperfections, such as small specks, slight colour variation or grain irregularities. These are purely visual and do not affect the performance of the bat.

Grade 3 / Performance

Contains more noticeable cosmetic characteristics, including uneven grain, butterfly stain or other natural markings. In some cases, these features can have a small impact on performance, but every bat is carefully assessed to ensure it still meets our playing standards and offers excellent value.

A note on willow: Every cleft of English willow is different. Straight grains and a clean face are desirable for appearance, but they don't automatically make a bat perform better. The quality of the pressing, shaping and craftsmanship are just as important in producing a bat that performs at its best.
